It’s Roan! And she’s….earthbending?

Wait, wait?!

Okay, this is something I’m having a massive internal argument with myself over. There’s a magic system in Overworld based upon the crystals, however I also have a pair of Gods, one of Law and one of Disorder. The god of law’s domain is earth, metal and other such solid objects whereas the domain of the god of Disorder is wind, water etc. I already have a character who uses different magic to what the common people of the world are aware of, granted directly by the God of disorder, he manipulates a kind of black watery fluid.

However, when I came to think of the opposing magic given by the God of Law, or earth, all I could think of was Earthbending!

The annoying thing is that I love the visual style of earthbending. One of my favourite things about avatar is the way that the powers extend and amplify each of the movements made by the character and, considering I see Roan as a very active character, it’s something I’d really like.

However, even though I reached this point via in-canon reasoning, I still can’t help but feeling that I’ve just stolen it.

So I’m struggling to find something else that would give the same visual appeal and would fit into the religions of Overworld but isn’t a cheap earthbending ripoff.

And I’m wondering if it’s worth sacrificing something that I really like the look and feel of because it’s shown somewhere else. I mean, there are plenty of fantasy things with manipulation of the 4 basic elements, why can’t mine.

But then I think I’m just being lazy, even though I can’t think of anything that fits as well!

Damnit. If anyone has any thoughts or advice on this or other things I could try, I’d really appreciate it ‘cause I feel like I’ve put up a wall that I can’t see over anymore.

Now this is more like it! More clothing designs, and I’ve been working on a lot of worldbuilding these past few days so I think things are starting to look, and feel, a lot more cohesive. I was really working to show the difference between the Overworld and the world below, or Nissria. Nissria has developed in leaps and bounds since the cataclysm, it’s society rapidly coming together into a more solid form as they turned from a group of territories to an alliance and, now, to an empire. I wanted their style to reflect this, a more refined and dignified style with clear cut social classes. The Overworld, on the other hand, has developed very little since the cataclysm due to their scattered nature and lack of resources. “Needs must” has pretty much been the tenet of their survival, and I wanted their clothing styles to reflect that. I imagine them wearing a base of tight fitting cloth and personality was show through various looser fabrics on top of that. Since the Nissrian occupation, however, the clothing styles have become a little more sophisticated with nicer cut material, but the whole style hasn’t died out completely. I also like the idea that the Nissrian styles that work just fine down on the surface are bulky, uncomfortable and downright dangerous in the gusty Overworld, where one false step can send you hurtling to your doom, and so as such their styles have adapted somewhat to those of the Overworld.

I’ve been taking part in ArtSlam over on tumblr this month, using it to work on Overworld’s development. This was today’s piece. Not really the style that Overworld is going to be in, but I felt like trying some new things out :D
I’m really hoping to ramp up my production of Overworld over the next couple of months. Watch this space, I’m hoping to get things off the ground pretty shortly!
I’m not gonna lie, I’m terrified…
Let’s do this!

Reblogging this for the morning crowd ‘cause I like it and cause I do what I wawn’

Bleh. I originally intended to get far more done with this character today but things kept getting in the way, as is their wont. Anyway, this is a couple of doodles of Cass, the protagonist of Overworld, and some scrappy development of Roan, one of the other main characters. Cass is the captain of the ship Jean works on. Roan is a girl who works on her dad’s Beacon Herding ship. Basically, since even the islands that exist in a doldrum (an area with little air movement) move around a certain area and are often obscured by clouds or nightfall, beacon herders take specially designed torches that can stay in one position and set up perimeters around islands so that sailors can navigate to them when conditions are less than ideal. She longs for freedom away from her responsibilities but her father’s fanatical sense of duty won’t allow it. She’s also likely to have some degree of magical power in the story, but I’m still ironing out the details of the magic system so that will have to wait :)

Hey lookit, I finally finished this! And I painted something else! How about that? This must be the art equivalent of growing up and getting a mortgage or something, I’m so proud of me. This is one of my girlfriend’s DnD characters, Bronwyn, in all her sorcery glory. It’s turned out, by pure happenstance, that I’ve drawn one of her characters like this each year so I’m starting to use them as a kind of impromptu series for benchmarking my skill as it develops.
